I met Jennifer last May and this month I finally had the pleasure of documenting her union with Devin. Jennifer and Devin are an awesome couple who persevered despite living hundreds of miles away for their entire relationship.
Their relationship was a match made in heaven but it didn’t start out that way. Jennifer and Devin first met in 2002 at Fifth Bar and Grill in Brooklyn. After that brief meeting they weren’t so fond of each other. Over the next year, Jennifer and Devin’s relationship blossomed into a great friendship while he was living in the states. According to Jennifer “Our friends always hinted to me that he had a ‘crush’, but I never took them on. On the night before Devin was to leave to return to Canada he confessed his feelings to me, to which I responded, ‘Oh, that’s nice’. I did not want to admit that I had feelings for him because I did not forsee a future in a long distance relationship…” Despite not confessing her mutual feelings they remained friends for the time being.
Fast forward three years to the Hazlewood family reunion in Toronto, Canada in 2006. Jennifer and friends decided to go to Caribana, an annual Caribbean festival.
Jennifer’s perspective. “My friends and I decided to go to Caribana which was very easy for me because I would already be in Canada. Mysteriously, a week before I was to leave for my family’s reunion one of my friends informed me she could not make the trip. A few days before I am to leave my two other friends pull out of the trip, leaving me with an extended plane ticket and no place to stay. Michelle suggested that I stay at her family’s house (Devin’s family) and that she would make the arrangements. Well, let’s just say I had a wonderful weekend.”
Fast forward almost five years. “Devin and I have maintained a long distance relationship for the past four and a half years. We have overcome several obstacles (mainly the border, hahaha), but our love has sustained us through it all. We are living proof that a long distance relationship can work. The phone companies and airlines know us very well; we are just grateful to have each other and are extremely excited about this next chapter of our lives (Perk: We will not only be in the same country very soon, but under the same roof!)”
I’m extremely honored that Jennifer chose us to document her day. There was so much emotion throughout the day and we were just excited to be included in it all. Jennifer, Anyeka & I heart you!
